I thought the chat is about greeting the other players or to discuss general things outside the game. NOT talking about the cards you discovered as an individual player. In this game I've played the other players keep writing things like:
- right after they played a map card they wrote imediately what they saw under, eg. "middle is gold" or "bottom is coal". Sometimes they were right (when they were the gold miner) but also they were false (the saboteur)
- they ask what is under the map card when other player used this card
- who they think is the saboteur...
When you play face-to-face you only GUESS those informations (and you play acordingly) but you DON'T offer / share FACTS!
And I don't understand why this is acceptable for the online version.
Excerpts from the rules:
- Deal one card to each player, who looks at it and puts it face down in front of him WITHOUT REVEALING HIS ROLE TO THE OTHER PLAYERS. (Setup)
- The members of each group should work together, but often they CAN ONLY GUESS who their allies are! [... ] But, the identity of each dwarf is not revealed until the gold is split up. (Object of the Game)
So, in the original rules is NOTHING about misleading ON PURPOSE the others.
Is it ok?

Because it would make no sense to allow a player to declare having a role he does not have, without allowing the players to claim the role corresponding to the card received.
When it comes to banning verbal exchanges between players, that would have nothing to do with the rule that says nothing about it.
I suppose that Saboteur was extensively tested before being marketed, and a negligence of the author on an issue as essential as the exchange of information between players seems to me excluded in the absence of evidence to the contrary.
Your bug has probably been fixed already, or was linked to a temporary failure of BGA service.
In any case, when filling a bug report, make sure to have an explicit title linked to the incident (ex: with error message), so other players can recognize it and vote for it.
